On Sunday Chanti played in her last soccer tournament with the Gryphons. Between the two games a group of us (five kids and five parents) went out for lunch. One mom who made the mistake of driving her minivan had the dubious honor of transporting all five kids both to and from lunch. When we got back to the soccer field, she told us about the conversation that ensued on the way back.
It began with my daughter announcing, "I'm from Cambodia, you know." That elicited the response, "CAMBODIA! Where's THAT???"
"It's in ASIA."
"ASIA!!! You lived in ASIA????"
"Yes. I'm adopted."
"So did you live in an orphanage there?"
"No. I lived in a foster home."
"What's that?"
"That's when a family takes care of you until you get adopted."
There is a nearly audible sound of wheels in five nine-year old brains clicking away as they digest this information. ChantÃ, unable to endure the silence then asks, "And do you know what the capital of Cambodia is???" Of course, no one knows and there is silence. "It's PHNOM PENH!"
"PING PONG!!!!!"
"NO. Phnom Penh!"
Giggles all around.
